I developed the full design for two twin duplex suites created for holiday use in the coastal city of Salinas, Santa Elena, Ecuador. Each unit was organised across two levels: the ground floor accommodates the dining area, kitchen, and bathroom, while the upper floor is dedicated entirely to the bedroom, ensuring privacy and a more intimate retreat. The architectural proposal blends concrete structure with timber accents, achieving a balance between warmth, durability, and a coastal character that responds to the site’s atmosphere.
The project incorporates locally sourced timber, crafted through traditional Ecuadorian carpentry techniques that bring an artisanal character to the space. This wood was used throughout the floors, stairs, and doors, adding texture, warmth, and a sense of place to each suite. On the upper level, large windows open onto a private balcony overlooking the garden, creating a seamless connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape.
To complement the space, a picturesque concrete bench was crafted and decorated with natural river stones and fragments of colorful clay ceramics, creating a textured, artisanal focal point. Resting above it, a small grapevine welcomes guests as they arrive, offering a charming and unexpected touch that enhances the sense of retreat.
